Director of Engineering

Job Description

The Director of Engineering job responsibilities include developing, conducting, and managing a portfolio of demand-side management projects focusing on building energy usage.  The work will entail development of program ideas, proposals, management of budgets and schedules, maintaining quality control of work products, and client coordination. The Director of Engineering will manage other Engineering staff and will have responsibility for delivering work products through a collaborative team process while maintaining a high degree of customer service using timely and clear communications. Project types will include energy standards (Title 24), emerging technology, monitoring and evaluation, utility efficiency programs, and CCA technical and programmatic support.

The candidate must have the ability to develop a working relationship with key Energy Commission and Public Utility Commission staff, utility staff, and stakeholders involved in the Codes and Standards, utility programs, and Emerging Technologies areas. Residential and non-residential Certified Energy Analyst (CEA) certifications and a PE are preferred. The ability to understand and communicate complex technical concepts is highly desired.   Experience at managing a team of engineers is required.

The position is a full-time (exempt) position in an office and lab environment in Davis, California. Some overnight travel is required.

Skills and Experience

Education: Master’s degree in engineering (degrees in other technical fields will be considered with significant relevant experience)

Work Experience:

1.   A demonstrated record of prior work in the building science arena with strong written and communication skills as demonstrated in authored technical reports, publications, and/or conference presentations. Candidate should be a recognized technical expert in the field.

2.  A strong technical background in the following areas:

  1. Building science and technologies relating to building energy systems
  2. Building energy simulation models (including the CEC-recognized compliance software tools)
  3. California Title 24 Building Energy Standards
  4. Utility energy efficiency programs

3.  At least ten years of experience including at least five years of experience managing technical staff

The following skills are desired:  familiarity with CPUC evaluation protocols, understanding of commercial building mechanical systems and controls, experience with utility and/or third party programs, and knowledge and understanding of California energy policies and legislation.

Senior Engineer

Job Description

The Senior Engineer job responsibilities encompass developing, conducting, and managing a portfolio of R&D, EM&V, and Title 24 Codes and Standards related projects focusing on building energy usage, with a primary focus on the residential, multifamily and mixed use sectors.  Experience in analysis of energy use patterns in commercial buildings and utility energy efficiency programs is desirable.  The candidate will propose new project ideas, write and submit proposals, organize and manage data collection efforts, analyze data, and prepare reports for clients and stakeholders.

The candidate must have a strong background in building science and building efficiency technologies, including renewables. A knowledge and understanding of California Title 24 Building Energy Standards over at least the last two Title 24 code cycles is also desirable. The candidate must have the ability to develop a working relationship with key Energy Commission staff, utility staff, and stakeholders involved in the Codes and Standards and Emerging Technologies area. The candidate should demonstrate a working knowledge of building energy simulation models (including the CEC-recognized compliance software tools), and be proficient with Excel, PowerPoint, and other data analysis tools. Residential and non-residential Certified Energy Analyst (CEA) certifications are preferred.

A strong background in technology evaluation and code and standards is a prerequisite.  The ability to understand and communicate complex technical concepts is required.

The following skills are desired:  familiarity with CPUC evaluation protocols, understanding of commercial building mechanical systems and controls, experience with utility and/or third party programs, and understanding of current California activities related to demand response.

Candidate must have a degree in a relevant engineering or technical field.  A B.S. degree plus 10-15 years experience or a

M.S. degree plus eight years of relevant experience is required.
