San Francisco, Calif. -- Flex Your Power, California’s statewide energy efficiency campaign, recognized Davis Energy Group as a leader in energy efficiency with a 2005 Flex Your Power Award. A total of 35 businesses, local governments and institutions were selected from a highly competitive pool of over 260 applications. The combined energy savings of the 35 award winners alone totals $71 million dollars and 275 million kWh -- enough to power more than 45,000 homes. The Flex Your Power Awards originated in 2001 to acknowledge outstanding leadership in energy efficiency that helped California through the energy crisis.

Davis Energy Group (DEG) was highlighted for introducing two cooling technologies designed to save energy and trim utility bills. The first technology, called NightBreeze, combines conventional heating/cooling equipment and advanced predictive controls to automatically ventilate homes at night. Testing shows that cooling costs can be reduced by up to 65% and that compressor-based cooling can be eliminated in some climates. The second technology, known as OASys, uses a novel heat exchanger to cool air with far less humidity than conventional evaporative coolers, saving 90% of total energy use, and 80% of peak electrical energy. Advanced Energy Products and the Speakman Company are marketing the NightBreeze and OASys systems, respectively.

Of the award winners, Commissioner Susan Kennedy, of the California Public Utilities Commission, said, "The Flex Your Power Award winners should inspire us all to use energy more wisely. California recently launched the most aggressive energy efficiency and conservation campaign in the history of the United States. Our ambitious goals can only be achieved if all Californians are as committed to energy efficiency and conservation as the 2005 Flex Your Power Award Winners."

In addition to the Public Utilities Commission, winners were selected by an expert committee including: California Business Roundtable; California Energy Commission; California Urban Water Conservation Council; California Energy Commission; California Farm Bureau Federation; Energy Foundation; League of California Cities; National Resources Defense Council; Sacramento Municipal Utility District; Building Operators Managers Association and Southern California Edison.

A Davis-based mechanical engineering firm, DEG has been an innovator in energy efficiency and renewable energy for 25 years. DEG was also recently selected to be the California provider for the U.S. Green Building Council’s LEED-Homes program, and serves as a team member of the Department of Energy’s Building America program.
